Pair of LA3 Tuning Forks

Pair of LA3 Tuning Forks

A pair of mounted tuning forks for interference and resonance experiments.

Tuning forks have been a standard tool in school laboratories helping students understand the relationship between wave frequency and pitch
The Altay Tuning Fork Set can be used to perform several experiments.

Ideal for the determination of wave frequency (can be used with a data logger and sound sensor) and the determination of pitch.

These high quality aluminium forks are mounted on a base to enhance the resonant sounds.

Ships complete with rubber mallet.

The tuning-fork is a sound generator. It was invented by John Shore in 1711, and it is used for determining musical pitch and also in sound experiments.

It generates a pure sound of a determined frequency. Each fork is a metallic elastic body which vibrated and then generates longitudinal elastic waves of acoustic frequencies.

The tuning forks will produce a note of frequency 440 Hz. Two adjustable masses can be fitted to the tuning fork and it can modify the frequency of each one by moving up and down the arm.

Laws and principles investigated

experiment: Pure tone - LA3 sound and resonance

  • Use of the tuning forks
  • Resonance
  • Interference
  • Beats

When the tuning-fork is mounted on the resonance box and is dtruck by the mallet, it will transmit a vibrational energy to the walls of the resonance box and then to the air inside the box.

The box is also an oscillating system and therefore it can resonate both on the fundamental frequency and also on the higher harmonics.
The sound produced by the tuning fork system is much more audible that a tuning fork that is not mounted on a resonance box.

This is because the resonance box will provide a much greater radiating surface to propagate the sound waves.

The dimensions of the box have been determined so that “l”, the true length of the air column inside, is practically equal to a fourth of the wavelength λ of the fundamental note emitted by the tuning-fork.

You can vibrate a tuning fork without even touching it. This is done by resonance. This is done by striking another tuning fork facing the one you want to resonate. You will notice that the maximum resonance to experienced when both of the open resonant boxes face each other (as shown above).

The tuning fork B vibrating causes the air inside the box vibrate. The stationary waves that are established inside the hollow space determine the propagation in the surrounding space of a sound with frequency equal to that of the tuning fork. Also the air within the box A vibrates resonating with the sound emitted by the cavity B. The air inside the box A then vibrated and transmits the vibration to the walls and then to the tuning fork.
